IT trends driving rapid change

Business IT solutions have been evolving at a rapid rate in recent years, blurring the line between business systems and personal IT.

As a result organisations need to re-evaluate IT solutions and the role it plays in the business environment.

Mike van Lier, Divisional Head of Enterprise Business Team (EBT) at Samsung Electronics, South Africa notes that there are three key trends driving this significant shift in business IT in South Africa.

  • Consumerisation of IT

The cutting edge technology that was previously designed and only used in enterprises has speedily trickled into the consumer space. With consumers able to access best performance technology and information on the go, they expect the same, or more, from their business system – they also tend to integrate the two.

  • The acceleration of innovations cycle

Previously, solutions and infrastructure were driven by long-term product cycles and were in place for five years or longer. Today the drive to retain the competitive edge and be ahead of the game has resulted in far more frequent hardware and software upgrades.

There has been a major shift in the focus of IT budgets from standardisation to innovation. According to the Deloitte CIO Survey 2013, CIOs are seeking to drive innovation, allocating 42 percent of their 2014 budgets to change and growth, with 58 percent allocated to business as usual. More than 80 percent of the respondents also indicated that addressing new business needs is a priority for them this year.

  • The changing role of technology in business

A company’s IT structure often dictates the efficiency of their business, whether on service and product delivery or how promptly these are rolled out to their customers. Businesses that adopt and integrate the latest tools appropriately and effectively will gain a competitive advantage, with the reverse being true for those not implementing correctly. IT determines how flexible, scalable and dynamic an organisation can be. In fact, it has become such a high priority that it has now moved from an IT department decision to a boardroom focus.

“The emergence of these trends in recent years has further been influenced by the rapid growth of smart devices and on-demand services, meaning that businesses must work harder and smarter to keep up. As a result, the business experience is under pressure to deliver convenience and efficiency. This movement in the enterprise IT market has triggered a wave of rapid innovation,” explains van Lier.
